E-Mail Virus
- The Beagle E-mail Worm Hunts Unsuspecting Internet Users
You may have heard about the recent outbreak and subsequent spread of an e-mail worm that shows coming from the recipient's ISP (Internet Service Provider). The name of this worm is "Beagle" but it has a multiple of variants which work in a similar manner.
goNDTC DSL Advantages
- There's a lot more to high-speed internet access than download speeds.
Here are just a couple of things that differentiate DSL from cable. First, the technological side:
1. NDTC's DSL service is a "one-on-one" service. Your DSL connection is a direct, unshared connection to our network. Cable is more likened to a party line, where everyone on the "node" (could be one square block, could be the entire city) shares the connection to the cable hub. Therefore, each customer is competing with the other customers on the node for the available bandwidth for that node. DSL is a non competitive environment, with each user getting his share of unshared bandwidth.
2. NDTC's DSL is a "synchronous" service. Your upload and download bandwith allocations are identical. Cable is not. Typically, cable allocates only around 128k for upload bandwidth. Whether or not this matters really depends on how you use the Internet. If you use, or are planning to use, some of the more sophisticated services on the Internet, it is very pertinent. For instance, if you use Netmeeting or some other videoconferencing software, your maximum connection rate is based on the maximum rate that your connection is able to achieve, taking into account both UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD capabilities. Therefore, if you can only attain a 64k stream on your uploading side with a cable modem (remember, shared bandwidth), then your entire upstream/downstream connection will be limited to 64k. With NDTC's DSL, your upload and download speeds are the same, ensuring a reliable, predictable amount of bandwidth, which is critical to this type of two-way service. Even if you can download web pages at 1.5 meg, any of the new, advanced services that are beginning to mature on the Internet will be disappointing.
3. NDTC allows all Internet subscribers (dialup or DSL) to utilize an 800 number dialup access line while out of town. This allows the customer to access e-mail, the web, and any other Internet service while away from the DSL connection. A nominal fee applies to the 800 number usage.
Now, for a look at the differences between the services on a more personal note. NDTC is responsible for the happiness of it's customers, and we take that responsibility very seriously. We offer free help desk services, included e-mail virus protection with available junk mail filter, a monthly e-newsletter, and highly trained
local
employees in each of our departments that are here to help our customers when there is a problem or complaint. NDTC is also very active in all of the communities that we serve. In 2003, NDTC invested in excess of
$50,000
back into our local communities in the form of scholarships and other charitable donations.
Also, when comparing prices, look for the "small print" and hidden costs. For instance, with the NDTC DSL service, there is no modem to purchase or rent - the modem is always NDTC property, which means that if there is ever a problem with the modem or a system upgrade requiring a modem replacement, we deal with the modem at no cost to you. Cable is charging rent for their modem, or allowing the customer to purchase the modem. However, if anything goes awry with the modem, it is the customer's financial responsibility to replace it.

Question:
I still use Microsoft's Windows 98 for my computer's operating software. I heard that Microsoft does not support Windows 98 any longer. Is this true?
